Overview of Pregnancy-Related Request Process 

Step 1: Request Submission

  • Student/Employee makes pregnancy-related request to OPHD

Step 2: Initial Assessment

  • OPHD assesses whether request is for a:

    • Reasonable Modification (Path A)

    • Formal Accommodation (Path B)

  • This step may include an informational meeting with OPHD

 Path A: Reasonable Modification 

  • Occurs during the course of typical pregnancy and is not related to complications or aggravated medical conditions.

  • Examples Include:

    • Breaks during class/work

    • Exam rescheduling

    • Tardiness/Absence

    • Elevator/equipment use

    • Access to lactation spaces

    • Allowance for students to maintain a safe distance from hazardous substances

  • Implementation: OPHD works with implementing academic or human resources unit.

Path B: Formal Accommodation

  • Relates to pregnancy complications impacting major life activities.

  • Examples Include:

    • Severe morning sickness

    • Preeclampsia

    • Doctor-ordered bed rest

    • Gestational diabetes

  • Implementation: OPHD refers request to appropriate disability resource unit (with party's consent):

    • Office for Students with Disabilities

    • Disability Counseling & Consulting

    • Workers' Compensation & Disability Management
